Mimi Ison Womaness Woman

Mimi Ison is a force to be reckoned with. Formerly a creative director for a renowned jewelry brand, she has now become a champion of pro-aging and anti-ageism. Through her blog Hey Middle Age and her social media presence (@heymiddleage), Mimi uses her platform to change the narrative around aging—and motivate middle agers to live their best lives, move their bodies, and defy age stereotypes. At 59 years old, she's proof that life can be lived to the fullest at any stage. Here’s a glimpse at how she's doing just that.

First thing I do each morning

I drink a big glass of water and take a 1-mile walk. It's a morning ritual I started a year ago, and it took months to make it a regular habit. I'm not a morning person! I used to snooze my alarm several times, immediately check my phone, and fill my mind with messages and lousy news. Now I have a calm and energetic start to my day.

Three things I always keep on my nightstand

A S’well water bottle, a red light therapy pad (I use it every night for lower back pain), and whatever book I’m reading about health. Currently, it’s Outlive by Peter Attia, MD.

My go-to beauty hack or wellness ritual

A glowy moisturizer under my sunscreen. Boom Silk is my go-to.”

There’s a David Bowie quote that nails it for me: 'Aging is an extraordinary process whereby you become the person you always should have been.'

My inner age (the age I really feel) and why

I feel like I have two ages. One age is no age which allows me to do things without ever feeling like I’m too old, like starting ballet at 40, an internship at 43, my first real career job at 45, boxing training at 50, launching a blog at 58, and dancing on Instagram at 59. The other is spot-on my current age—spine degeneration, osteopenia, and annual test results that are not optimal. It’s why I take action now to extend my health span.”

Advice I would give to my younger self

Knock it off with the paralyzing fear. It gets you nowhere.

We don’t believe in “The Pause.” Tell us, what are you not pausing on?

There’s a David Bowie quote that nails it for me: 'Aging is an extraordinary process whereby you become the person you always should have been.'

Word that best describes your Womaness

Forwardness.”
